LightRecycle™ is a family of recycling programs for recycling mercury-containing lights. LightRecycle Collection Sites make it easy to recycle these lights.

Light Recycle is funded by an Environmental Handling Charge: Manufacturers and distributors add twenty-five cents per light to all mercury-containing lights sold at retail in Washington State.

Washington State law makes it illegal to throw away mercury-containing lights in the garbage, as mercury is a potent neurotoxin. This includes Fluorescent Light Tubes (straight or curved), Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), and High Intensity Discharge Lights (HIDs).

Residents can recycle, at no charge, up to 10 lights per day at any LightRecycle Collection Site. There are 11 locations within Bellevue, which accept any Fluorescent Light Tubes, CFLs, or HIDs, with the exception of the 4 Bartell Drugs stores, which only accept CFLs.
