Each mattress has an average life span of 11 years, but when thrown away takes up to 40 cubic feet of landfill space. In King County 90,000 mattresses weighing more than 3,000 tons were disposed in 2011.
Alternatives to mattress disposal include recycling, charitable donation for reuse, and refurbishing for resale or donation. While recycling options are currently limited in the Pacific Northwest, there is great potential for recycling. Mattresses are made up of several recyclable materials, including polyurethane foam, cotton, wood and steel coils.
There are a small number of mattress recyclers in King County, find them at http://your.kingcounty.gov/solidwaste/takeitback/mattress/index.asp
